Bajaj Auto exhibited the old Pulsar 220 DTS Fi at the Auto Expo 2006 with great pomp and flourish. However, they went ahead quietly with the Bajaj Pulsar 200 despite their earlier promise of producing the 220 first. With no endorsements, Pulsar 200cc was suddenly displayed at Bajaj showrooms across the country. The 200cc bike comes with Bajaj’s stock engine bored to 198.8 cc. Power output is at 18.01 PS at 8000 rpm and the short stroke of 56mm in addition to a good exhaustive system
. As far as actual performance is concerned, the bike is not blazingly fast with a top speed of only around 126 kmph, but then this bike goes from standstill to 60km in less than six seconds. The joy of the pulsar 200 is not the top speed or the 0-60 acceleration, but cruising on the highway at around 100 kmph, knowing that a slight flick of the wrist will push this bike even faster. The oil-cooled engine indicates the engine stays refined and this relatively large engine is pretty fuel efficient too, giving a mileage of about 45 km for a litre of 93 octane petrol. Now here is a bike that has got horsepower and great performance, but what disappoints about the 200cc is the handling. This bike rides well in the city, handling most of the rigours of traffic, but on twisty highways, the rear suspension tires out.
Engine:
Bajaj Pulsar 200cc features India’s first oil cooled engine which delivers a maximum power of 18Ps@8000rpm making it the most powerful engine offered by Bajaj. It has an air cooled single-cylinder with an alloy barrel and head along with the twin valves. Oil cooler placed just below the fuel tank helps in further cooling of engine lubricant and keeps the large 198.8cc motor cool.
With Digital twin spark ignition (DTS-i) and torque expansion chamber – ExhausTEC provides sufficient levels of torque at low engine rpm levels and is optimized to provide torque distribution in the mid and higher range rpm levels. Pulsar 200cc features a five speed gearbox with one down and four up pattern. The 200cc bike offers a mileage of 38.3kmpl in the city and 42.4kmpl on highways.
Design And Comfort:
Pulsar 200cc derives its identity from 180cc and 150cc with new additions which includes a host of features. It has black paint theme carried over to the front fork legs, rear shock absorbers, and the swing arm, in addition to the engine and six spoke alloy rims. A lowered headlamp and fairing assembly along with a high tail-end gives it an aggressive look. A true sporty look of the bike is sourced from the stainless steel silencer with an aluminum muffler cover. Sleek, twin row, Light-Emitting Diodes (LEDs) derived from the upgraded pulsar 180cc along with the split grab-rail perfectly highlights rear chiseled look. It is the first bike in India to feature both front and rear tubeless tyres, which proves safer than conventional tube type. The rear tyre is the broadest in its category to ensure better road grip and stability coupled with split seats being another first in India. Pulsar 200cc has digital odometer, digital fuel gauge, and digital trip meter and digital console which uses only LEDs and intelligently varies its amber backlight intensity for viewing in either day or night.
Ride And Handling:
200cc Pulsar has a shorter wheelbase, which makes negotiating a turn easier. The bike offers disc brake at the front and drum brake at the rear as a standard feature. With tubeless tyres at the front and the back, Pulsar gives excellent traction control. Both the bikes offer a commanding position for riders. But with split seats and carefully placed foot rest the pillion rider in the pulsar 200cc gets better visibility. The split seats give a sporty look, which look excellent and satisfying for the bike enthusiasts.
